I looked up at the sky, above the streetlights and ambient haze to see a beautiful predawn light creeping into the dark blue-black and tiny pin pricks of crystal clear light twinkling through. An audible chuckle came from my throat as I got this deep down feeling that nature was smiling on me,almost like a game of peek-a-boo.
My stress of catching the bus and the day ahead rolled away. How about gift certificates for things people love, like massage, or a movie at the Edmonds Theater. We have so many great restaurants...Think of one you have heard good things about but haven't been to yet (like Caravan Kebab maybe) and take a friend to lunch or dinner. Glorious Treasures at Firdale Village is what it sounds like; a treasure trove of eclectic items someone on your list will love! Don't forget about the sweet animals... How about a day at The Whole Pup, or Peanut's Pals (for small dogs). The Whole Pup also offers grooming and has training available that is fun and productive (I can attest). How about a holiday meal for your dog at The Dining Dog? It is a one of a kind experience for you and your dog! SplashDog has gift certificates and (shameless plug) so does Works with Dogs if your pup needs some cozy physical therapy.
So, happy holiday season to everyone and thank you for shopping locally and supporting your friends and neighbors!

Coming to Terms

Okay, I should be working. I have a lot of work to get done and feel like there is no end to the additional projects that pop up. But, right now I have to stop, reflect and acknowledge what I have been dealing with lately.

As someone who works with dogs professionally to try to ease pain and discomfort I am very often working with old dogs and disabled or mobility challenged dogs. When I say often, I'm talking about probably ninety percent of my canine clients fall into that category. I feel good about what I do. My clients and their guardians are usually helped and most often report success to some degree. The difficulty comes from the fact that they are old.

Old dogs are special. Like elderly humans the dogs sometimes change in ways we can understand if we put thought into it. They can become more demanding, more stubborn, more dependent on a strict routine and other mental changes occur that can be tough to deal with. They also start showing signs of physical changes like difficulty getting up and down, general mobility problems, change of sleep patterns, and weaker bladder and control of bowels plus loss of hearing and site. It isn't easy growing old and these dogs, our family members, need more care and attention as they go through these changes. They deserve our patience and understanding.

Caring for an elderly dog can be challenging to say the least. As a complimentary care health practitioner who works with these dogs my challenge is to deal with what is going on with them and their family through the aging process. Seeing them once a week or every other week, it doesn't take long for me to become very close to them. I develop a special feeling for each of the dogs I work with. When the time comes that I won't see one of them again it is painful.

Recently one of the beautiful dogs I have worked with for 4 years passed away. I was allowed to say goodbye to him. I am so grateful to his family for allowing me to have some one on one time with him and touch him one more time. I loved this dog very much. My pain is nothing compared to what his family feels I know. I've been on that side too.

Just as I move on and begin to book new clients and meet more dogs that need care, I am surprised to find out that another of my clients has failed. The circumstances are beyond the guardians means and probably beyond the point of any Veterinary care other than palliative or hospice. The dog's guardian was distraught and defeated. He didn't know who to call or try to contact. We discussed options and I was able to give him some referrals of in home Vet.'s that could help him help his dog pass on.

After hanging up from this last conversation I feel a strange detachment. Not from the dog or the guardian but from daily life. Almost as if I am moving out of a home. That feeling I get when I have been comfortable for a long period of time with my surroundings and now I have to walk away. That is how I cope. Sometimes it is much harder to do than other times. Today is hard. I will allow it to be but tomorrow I must walk.

Oliver Goes Swimming

Hi my name is Oliver. You may have seen my picture on J's site (although I am much handsomer in person) as I occasionally get massages from her

About a month ago my mom picked me up at The Whole Pup (another good place to see pics of me) and said "you are going to see J Linn tomorrow and swim!" Huh I thought-me swim. Oh no I don't think so. I am a Lhasa (ok mix but still) not a LAB-what was she thinking??

Saturday arrived and off we went-yippee. I have been to Splash Dog before Tully Girl used to go there to swim. I smelled the air and thought I am outta here no swimming for this dude!
I see J Linn and think ok, not so bad a massage which I could use after a hard week playing at TWP.. Egads, I have to get in the water first- no way Jose! Well, of course I was overruled and into the water went. Now I love my mom but she acts like a cheerleader-"come on Oliver you can do it." Geez, how embarrassing. Then she makes fun of my unique use of my tail as a rudder. How rude is that I ask you?

Well, finally I am done and let me tell you I ran down the ramp and was excited to get into the tub for a bath-which I am usually not-who wants to smell like that shampoo? I like my manly ala naturale smell.

Low and behold two weeks later and there I was again. It was not as bad this time but still-I am a cool dude and messing with my "do" is just not right. My mom tells me I am swimming better-Tully must me helping me. Well, maybe a little. She was old and she could swim like nobody's business.

Then last Saturday there we were again. I was excites this time though because I had been practicing my technique during my many naps. And let me tell you I was a sight to behold! I swam and swam. No rudder needed! I swam around the pool 3 times! Not bad for a pup with crooked front legs. J Linn said I am buff like I work out in the gym (thank you for noticing!) but with more swimming I will have a body like a runner! I may be neutered but I am still a chick magnet. My 1990 Subaru Legacy wagon had served me well over the last 8 years and I am grateful that I had such a low maintenance vehicle. It has over 200 thousand miles on it and lots of little, head-ache repairs that need to be done to make it as lovable as it used to be. That could be a story in itself.

I will jump to the current. In the beginning of my search I was sure I wanted another Subaru wagon. What better car for someone who is prone to lugging around lots of stuff and who takes her dog pretty much everywhere? Okay, I hear all of you suggesting mini-vans and SUV's, but I like a wagon.

A friend of mine has a Forester and I suggested that if she wanted to sell it, I would be interested. I love the 1 owner, used cars. She told me it was a '4 paw' but the new ones she has looked at are definitely '3 paws'. What?! Oh, the paw rating system. On a scale of 1-5 how well does the car accommodate dogs and the needs we have with our dogs, 1 to 5 paws. Now that she mentioned it, there are more considerations than I had originally thought.

The next step was searching Craigslist and hitting car lots. The first thing I noticed was that big paw rating reducer, the seats did not fold down flat in the cargo area. Not great for several reasons. Another downside, cloth upholstery. My '90 Subaru had beautiful dark blue brushed upholstery...with little white furs stuck in it, everywhere, thick. Hmmm, to increase paw ratings my next wagon needed a flat cargo surface and leather or vinyl upholstery.

As I began looking at other makes of cars, I got choosier and could tell with a glance whether it was dog friendly or not. Too high off the ground, nope. No sunroof, huh-uh. You get the idea.

All of this lead me to what seemed to be the perfect choice, the Volvo wagon. Skip ahead now as I knew that was what I wanted and was on a mission to find the right match. Mileage, wear and tear and price were the main considerations. Found it. Bought it.

After getting it home and transferring the important stuff like the "wag more, bark less" stickers and the dog beds, I was ready to take Devi for her initial ride in the new, luxury, 5 paw wagon! Da-da-da-DA! She jumped in and sniffed it over, saw her stuff in it and knew we were going somewhere. She jumped into the front seat a little precariously due to the new feel of leather under her paws. She settled into her co-pilot's seat, sitting up straight, looking out the front window, occaisionally checking out the sides. Wait a minute! She couldn't see out the front window and barely out the side. The seat is low and the dash is high. She stood up and stretched as high as she could but slipped and crashed back down to an awkward sit. Feeling unsure of herself, she curled up in her nap position and rode the rest of the way without standing up.

Could it be? After all of that searching for the perfect 5 paw wagon I got it wrong? Would any dealer let me take my dog along on the test drive? Next time I will check. But for now, we have a 4 paw wagon that has a new foam, non-slip, booster seat and some rubber, non-slip, covers on some key areas of upholstery. Devi loves the sunroof and the flat cargo area, oh, and the air conditioning (another must on my list of paw rating advantages). I am happy with the car and my decision despite the alterations. And Devi? Well, she puts up with anything as long as we are together :-)

My Demo Dog

Not only is Devi my (almost constant) companion, playmate, ambassador, and protector, now she has become my demo dog as well. I teach a class which introduces people to canine massage so that they can use some professional techniques on their dogs safely and effectively. Devi helped me demonstrate a few of the techniques for a class and did very well. She only had to help for a few minutes as we didn't have a chance to have a good exercise session before the class and I didn't want her get disruptive.

She also was able to help alleviate a fearful dog's anxiety about the pool at SplashDog. The dog is afraid to swim and is anxious about the pool itself. I have had 3 sessions with her standing on the entry stairs across my lap to receive massage and have gotten her comfortable enough to stop shaking and stand up on her own. We have begun to leave the steps and make a circle in the water. Baby steps. She did pretty good with the circle this last time, getting a few swim strokes in.

As we were getting out of the pool I had an idea. The client dog knows Devi and they have gotten along well. Devi has never liked to swim but she has learned to do it very well when I direct her. I brought Devi up and got her into the pool, swam her a few laps so the client could see. Devi did great and the client actually did watch her. Now we'll see if she has any more confidence next time.

I have my work cut out for me training her to help me demo the 1st aid/CPR class, but we'll start working on that and keep working her into the other areas more. Do I have to claim her as an employee? W2? SS#? Hmm. Maybe I'll just pay her in biscuits.

Devi's Tummy Scratching Technique

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v19.nonxt8.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D200df9b9cc47cf33%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331324360%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D6745C5034F40AB541AB44CBAC69FBC476B66C4D0.6BC342C93EC9F71AA667A8279F8E015B710DDA7A%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D200df9b9cc47cf33%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DcVDuD9EsV92Hq8q_DMCcpHi4WdQ&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Safe Swimming - If you have tried the method in Safe Swimming - Part II and kept the sessions short and calm while praising your dog and they still aren't getting it or wanting to it could be that your dog is not cut out for swimming.

You can try a couple of options to make it more fun and/or distract them. If you have a significant other or a friend your dog loves you can both get in the water and guide your dog to swim to that person. When they get there they get LOTS of praise and maybe even pick them up and carry them back to the starting point and do it again.

Another thing that may help is a toy or treat. If you have a pup that is crazy for tennis balls or loves cheese that might give them a little motivation to loosen up and go for it. Some dogs aren't interested in treats or toys in the beginning but after a session or two and they still haven't calmed down you can try introducing the treats or toy then.

If these methods don't help be safe and only put your dog in the water when you are with them and can retrieve them in case of an emergency situation. I recommend using a canine life vest, fitted properly, anytime your dog is on or in a body of water. The video at the beginning of Safe Swimming - Part II is of my dog Devi swimming in the pool at SplashDog. She wears a floatation device around her neck. In the photo at the beginning of Part I she is in a raft with me on a lake with her life vest on.

A few notes before I conclude the series. You might notice your dog shaking their head while they are in the water. Some dogs can be sensitive to water getting in their ears. Devi gets quite distracted when water gets in her ears. Her swimming becomes erratic. That is why she wears a flotation ring to keep her ears out of the water. The ring can also help if a dog can't keep their mouth up out of the water. These rings are sold as alternatives to the cones or elizabethan collars, but they work great in the water.

If you have any question about your dog's health, be sure to check with your Veterinarian before putting your dog in the water. Swimming is a good workout and if your dog has any health issues there can be safety concerns.

Take care of your family around water so you can all have fun!

Safe Swimming - Part II

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v13.nonxt6.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D83e95eddb34c2a73%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331324360%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D60B84FC01C06BBE78053E6762A7C0EB4040A4B8.3FAD29188D846886864A95A27A793165AED29B94%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D83e95eddb34c2a73%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3D5o2-NRDGPg6zbCtywJ4PaAyqxPg&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Teaching Your Dog to Swim

There are ways a person can safely determine what kind of swimmer their dog is and teach them proper, safe swimming form. The easiest of these is to call the closest canine water therapy pool or equivalent in your area. SplashDog in Edmonds, where I work, gets plenty of people who want to 1. find out if their dog can safely swim, 2. teach them the safe and effective swimming techniques and 3. get them comfortable with water.

Having worked with many of these dogs, I have found one thing that is going to make the process go faster and that is to be in the water with the dog. You can do that in any safe body of water, but at the canine pools, the water is warmer, more comfortable. When you work with any dog in the water, especially for the first time, expect to get beat up a little. Their flailing paws and unpredictable movement can get you scratched up. Wear clothing that will cover your arms and your upper legs. I wear water shoes as well as it gives me better traction in the water and it can be a challenge keeping up with a panicked dog.

The key is to be calm yourself. Don't get frustrated and force your dog into the water. If they won't walk in, don't pull them in by force right off the bat. Pick them up and walk in with them. Stop when you can stand them up in the water without it being over their shoulders. Try to get them to stand up. that may involve physically putting their feet on the bottom and holding them there for a few seconds so they can feel the ground. If they won't do it or begin to become anxious begin the swim training right away.

Staying calm, breathing and speaking in a soothing and happy tone of voice is a must. If you find yourself getting frustrated or frightened, stop the session promptly. Be sure to let the dog know they are doing a good job (even if you don't think they are). Some dogs can be very anxious about the unknown. If they are not typically around water they have no idea what is going to happen. The trust between you and your dog is key to making this process work well.

Once you are at the point of the dog standing in the water or have gotten to that point and they will not stand, proceed by putting one hand under them on their belly and a forearm or hand across their chest. Gently but purposefully pull them as you walk into slightly deeper water. Don't lift their belly or propel them through the water or they will allow you to do all the work. Your contact is only for support and steering. When they begin moving their legs, keep their forelegs in the water with your forearm,, or hand for smaller dogs across the chest. If the rear end begins to sink low, lift it a bit but don't constantly hold it up.

Steer the dog back to where they can stand on their own and encourage them to stand up without letting them run off. If you let them run onto shore now, it could be a struggle to get them back into the process. Repeat the process several times. When you feel the dog begin to relax with the paddling, not flailing as much, and they are swimming back to your starting point without a lot of steering on your part, then you can let them try swimming without full contact.

Safe Swimming - Part I

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 262px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_1KHPS09xVA4/S88ZEt5iv-I/AAAAAAAAAHk/jxj5wIf03j4/s320/IMG_0309.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5462612441854820322" />

Springtime. One day is warm and sunny, the next cool and rainy. This is a great time to think about summer safety, before summer is here. If you spend time around the water with your dog be sure your dog is going to be safe. There are a variety of ways to help insure their safety in most water and weather conditions.

Many people still believe that "all dogs can swim". Uh, not true. This misinformation has been around forever. It seems to be based on the idea that if someone throws a dog into a body of water the dog will paddle and keep themselves from drowning for a while. I cringe whenever I hear that idea. Working with dogs in water regularly has shown me just how untrue it is.

Back in the days when dogs were considered working animals more than family members people didn't think much about how the dog felt, especially psychologically, about being forced into a situation that they weren't comfortable with. That is still the case in many people's opinions.

Let's put this in personal terms. Think back to when you were a child and you looked up to your Mom or Dad. You were about 4 years old. You were at a lake for a picnic on a warm day and all was fun and comfortable. Then suddenly Mom or Dad pick you up and toss you into the water. WHAT?! Do you know how to swim?? Uh, NO! But you kick and flail your arms and are able to keep your self from drowning for a few minutes. How would you feel? Probably scared to death, confused, and if you are lucky not scarred for life.

It may not be different for your dog. Yes, some dogs are naturally drawn to water and have more of a natural ability to swim properly. It isn't always breed specific as we are inclined to believe. I've worked with Labradors that didn't like to swim, and Dachshunds that loved to swim. It isn't always predictable. Even if a dog loves the water, he or she may not know how to swim well enough to swim safely, especially if they are in water with any kind of current or left alone.

Please read the upcoming posts to help insure your dogs safety while enjoying summer fun around the water.

What a Place, Especially if You LOVE Dogs!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1KHPS09xVA4/S6ju3okyW6I/AAAAAAAAAHc/75wPthpjusc/s320/Devi+012.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5451869988483914658" />

I will stop short of saying that we live in a dog lovers paradise. Definitely not...but compared to much of the country Seattle and the surrounding area is pretty pro-dog. I sometimes get frustrated by rude comments and the people and businesses that are not open-armed about my dog, that is until I remember how many advantages we do have.

A person can hardly go a block in any residential area without running into at least 2 or 3 dogs. I live on the Interurban Trail and enjoy a steady stream of dogs and their people in all kinds of weather and all times of day (I don't go out there at night so I can't report on that). I would venture a guess that about 1 out of every 10 vehicles I see on the road has a dog in it.

We have doggie daycares in nearly every neighborhood, self wash dog washes, dog parks within a 10 minute drive most anywhere in the greater Seattle area. We are lucky to have some of the very best health care around, including Veterinary acupuncture and chiropractic, homeopathic practitioners, massage therapy, canine water therapy, pet 1st aid and CPR classes, nearly a dozen 24 hour emergency clinics, specialists in eye surgeries, cancer care and treatment, and more.

I have attended parties for dogs (yes the dogs) in honor of their birthdays, anniversaries, celebrations of life and farewells before death. Many of these include multiple dogs and their people, but it is all about the love of the four-legged (usually 4, sometimes 3), furry family members that many of us think of as our dependents. I have partied at The Dining Dog more than any nightclub, where we buy rounds of 'chowtini's' and gnosh on 'puppy pate' (and sometimes have some people food around for the humans). We sing to them, give them gifts, photograph and videotape them, play games with them, and share their unbridled joy at the attention they receive.

If this makes us crazy, then so be it. Those people that say we are demeaning our dogs by putting sweaters or jackets on them don't know the dogs I know. The ones I know that wear any kind of clothing would not have it left on them if they minded it. What is the difference between putting a pink sweater on my dog and some poor little kid having to wear their Sunday best and keep their hair perfect? The difference is, my dog gets cold without her sweater and once it is over her head she couldn't care less about it being there. If anything, she enjoys the attention.

When I hear people say that we spend too much money on our dogs I wonder why anyone would care about what I spend my money on. If I decided to spend everything I had and went into debt for a car no one would bat an eye. If I decide to spend a few thousand dollars to help my dog live longer and without pain, that is crazy?? Sorry, that is what doesn't make sense.

Our dogs have unlimited love to give, unbounded loyalty, they help keep us active, make us think about something/someone other than ourselves and bring us joy and comfort.

People who really love their dogs grieve the loss of their companion as much and often more than many other family members because of the closeness and unconditional love they give us. When I lost my 3 dogs my heart tore with each death. When the last of the 3 passed I felt like I was a balloon that had lost most of its air. So much of what I did in any given day was with, for or about my dogs. Coming home wasn't relaxing anymore and I didn't have a sidekick following me around the house keeping an eye on me. The joy of walking, riding in the car, arriving at a location and going to parks were all pretty muted. I spent months saying good night to each one of them before I fell asleep at night and feeling the tears when I realized I couldn't feel their fur or ears or breath anymore.

Then one day, I moved through the worst of it and began smiling again as I saw all of the other dogs and people who love dogs around me. Once I found my little girl and brought her home, I began the deeper level of healing. Although I still miss my other dogs often, sometimes painfully, I know we had one another to take care of and we were happy with that. My girl Devi is the focus now and I'm back to the routine of daycare, lots of walks, dog park visits, new doggie friends, everything that keeps me smiling and sane.

Yes, we live in a really good place. I can work with dogs professionally, recreate with them, so many dogs, so little time. We have a long way to go to become a dog lovers paradise, but we are on our way friends! Celebrate Dogs! (and dog lovers)

My Elusive Neighbor Makes an Appearance

Devi has been telling me for many months that there are otters out there! type='text'>New Pet First Aid/CPR Venue

I am excited to have another venue for Pet First Aid/CPR training classes. Besides the classes I've been teaching at different locations around the area, I am now working with CPR Seattle, http://www.cprseattle.com/old/ on Stone Way in the Wallingford neighborhood of Seattle. The classes taught at CPR Seattle are based on the American Safety & Health Institute guidelines.
The classroom is wonderful and in a great location.

At this time we have monthly classes scheduled, Dec. 13 and Jan. 24. We expect to continue at least once per month.
The classes are listed on and registration is taken through the CPR Seattle website. Be sure to look at the website for class discount coupons.

J Linn's Radio Interview

Listen to my radio interview from October of 2009. The Washington Talking Book and Braille Library has a radio station, the Evergreen Radio Reading Service. On that station there is a program called "The Talk Show" that is a call-in, interview show hosted by Darrell Thixton.

The services provided by the WTBBL and ERRS are invaluable to many people in our area. I was happy that they were interested in hearing about animal massage therapy and wanted to get the information out to their listeners.

Please enjoy the show....

http://www.wtbbl.org/audio/ts-091014.mp3

and please support this very important organization.

Miss Tully

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 312px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_1KHPS09xVA4/StCpUJUHfCI/AAAAAAAAAG8/uOl6zP5TsY4/s320/DSC00391_2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5390994917525257250" />
Over the years I have met and gotten to know many dogs. Most of those have had very loving people caring for them, loving and protecting them. When I became an animal massage therapist I began connecting with the dogs and their people in a deeper way. When someone has a family member that they love very much, that they are responsible for, who may be experiencing discomfort or pain and I am asked to help alleviate that pain and discomfort, the emotional well-being is as important as the physical relief.

I have had the privilege of knowing many of these relationships. One of the longest has been with Tully and her Mom, Elizabeth. Tully had a tough start in life. Like many of the beloved dogs I work with, she was rescued from a bad situation and welcomed into a forever, secure, loving family. Elizabeth nurtured Tully through her numerous emotional scars. She allowed Tully to be Tully soon realizing that under the scared, nervous exterior there was a royal personality waiting to blossom.

Tully soon realized her potential as a Diva and became the one of a kind lady we loved. She made an impression on all who met her. Her life was blessed with many years of the kind of love and attention that an only child craves until her Mom brought home a little brother. By then Tully was older, a senior in every sense of the word, and Oliver was taught to respect that. It became a somewhat peaceful, utilitarian situation for Tully who allowed Oliver to be the boy that he needed to be as long as he didn't infringe on her all encompassing rights.

Unfortunately for all of us, we have lost Tully as she had to cross the Rainbow Bridge. She was a trooper, true to her royal nature, right up to the end of her beautiful life here with us. We love you Tully, we grieve with you Elizabeth and we will always hold a warm place in our hearts and a smile for sweet, spunky, Tully. She is sorely missed.

Using My Canine First Aid Training Saved a Trip to the ER

Last night around 10:30pm I was preparing to leave my boyfriend's house when he said Devi, my dog who had fallen asleep on the sofa, was "twitchy". He had sat down beside her to say goodnight and she seemed startled and wouldn't get close to him. This behavior is quite unlike my little kissy monster.

I assumed she was just groggy from having started antihistamine medication the night before which was prescribed by our Vet. She had been scratching her tummy, underarms and forelegs for a week pretty frequently, probably from seasonal allergies, and he felt we needed to stop it before she gave herself any more cuts and abrasions.

I carried her to the car, sat her on the seat and Joe reached in to say goodbye again as by this time we were both worried about her. Again she pulled away. She LOVES Joe so this just wasn't normal.

On the drive home I noticed she was a bit wobbly and didn't have any expression in her eyes the way she usually does, having the expressive little face that she has. Once I parked I reached over to her and she jumped, like she was startled again. I began having feelings of dread that she was about to have a seizure or something. I've been through that several times with other dogs and was trying not to panic.

I put her on leash, got her out of the car and she walked down the steps to the door. Also unlike her usual routine of checking the perimeter of the yard before coming to the door. Once inside she plopped on the floor. Sure I was going to have to take her to the emergency clinic, I grabbed the med's she was on and my keys, when finally my training kicked in. I realized I have tools to help me decide if she truly needed to go to emergency.

I checked her vital signs, pulse, breathing rate and capillary refill time in her gums. All were within normal limits. Her pupils looked fine also. Just that small amount, yet important information calmed me and allowed me to make the decision to not take her to the 24 hour Vet clinic.

I put her on the bed on her fluffy cover, curled up around her and continued to monitor her breathing while giving her Reiki until we both fell asleep. A few hours later she woke up, wanted to go outside and seemed much more alert and like herself.

This morning upon waking she was her usual happy, kissy, wiggly self. Although she tired easily and slept most of the day on and off. I discontinued the med's (the morning prior was the last she had any). I spoke with her Vet and he agreed that it was most likely that she couldn't handle the antihistamines and to discontinue them.

Tonight she was excited to go for a walk, wanted to play and plowed her way onto my lap out of jealousy of my computer.

It sounds like such a small thing that checking her vitals and finding them normal was all it took to keep me from panicking and possibly running up a big bill and stressing my little girl out much more than she deserved, but that is exactly what happened.

I am grateful to have the tools of pet 1st aid/CPR training and am excited to pass it on to others. I hope that I never have a more serious situation that I have to use it for, but it is possible and I know I will be prepared to do what I need to do to respond to an emergency.

BUYER BEWARE

I want to share a lesson I recently learned in the hope that I can help prevent others from being taken advantage of and scammed.

We all have our weak moments, times we feel less than great about ourselves. I read a "blog" on the Seattle PI website that a local woman wrote regarding her weight loss program. I could certainly loose a few pounds and the program sounded harmless enough. She used the "new" wonder berry the acai berry. She saw information about it on Oprah. Well, there you go. How much more convincing does a person need? The blogger also recommended an herbal colon cleanse product as well that works in conjunction with the acai.

As it turned out both company's just happened to be running a free trial offer for "only" $5.95 shipping each. What a deal. What harm could there be other than wasting six bucks. I thought if nothing else, who couldn't use a colon cleanse now and then.

After entering all my shipping and credit card info. I simply waited with anticipation of how much better I would feel after getting a colon cleanse and possibly having more energy and clarity from the acai berry capsules.

First to show up was the colon cleanse. Awesome. I've done these before. No big deal, no extensive programs, just take the capsules as directed and have a gentle but thorough cleanse. I tossed the packaging, opened the bottle and popped out the 2 capsules I would take for the next 24 hours, 1 that night and the next in the morning.

By mid-day the next day I was cleansing alright. Not so gently though. I re-read the bottle to be sure I was following the directions and not taking too much. Diarrhea is no one's favorite situation. I expected a bit as I got going, so didn't worry about it. Not until 24 hours later when I was still having stomach cramps and irritable bowel. Obviously, I stopped taking the capsules. By the following day, (I apologize in advance for this) evidently my colon couldn't come up with anything but tissue as I was not passing anything but bloody flakes (really, I apologize).

Okay, those capsules went in the trash. So much for a free trial. $5.95 in the dump. But wait, the acai berry capsules arrived. They shouldn't be so harsh I thought, but just to be sure, I better read the literature. There were two sheets enclosed with the bottle. I read all the "amazing" details of what was possible with the product. Then I noticed the sentence, mid-paragraph, part way down the page that stated I would automatically be enrolled in the monthly program at just $65 mo. if I didn't cancel before the 15 day trial period was over.

There were two reasons for me to be uncomfortable at that point. One, I thought it was a 30 day trial since it was a 30 day supply in the bottle. Second, I hadn't seen any reference to an automatic enrollment on the website when I ordered the trial. So after I tried them for about a week and didn't notice any change in the way I felt I decided to cancel and send them back.

I contacted the company to be sure I had the proper address to return them to. Low and behold, it is a good thing I did as there was a RMA (return merchandise authorization) number required. That information was not stated anywhere in the literature that came with the product. I was told that without the number the delivery would not be accepted. Obviously if it was returned to me and I called them to find out why and had to ship them back, it would have been well past the 15 day trial. I smell a scam.

The true insult was when I received a second bottle of the colon cleanse capsules. I should have read the paperwork in the original shipment as it was the same 'offer' with the automatic sign up for the continuing program. My credit card was charged $88 for the first bottle (that I threw away) and the program was $88 plus $5.95 per month. $93.95 for a 30 day supply of herbal colon cleanse capsules!! I canceled the program and lost $88 and the original $5.95 shipping charge for each "free" trial.

BOTTOM LINE_____I will no longer order anything without thoroughly clarifying all details first. Be very careful friends. According to the customer service rep. I spoke to, I agreed to the program when I checked something on the order page on the original free trial order. They were two different companies, two different websites, but they both have the same M.O. and catches.

NO LONGER CAN WE TRUST UNTIL UNTRUSTWORTHY IS PROVEN. BE WARY OF ANY OFFER.

Devi Playing with her BFF Katie

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v10.nonxt2.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3De792ba8106a56046%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331324360%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D545F3A43EA52AD470C26FB5635CBA5ABD789BAF1.74CAA079E50847EF65FD32646BF51BB680077BD%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3De792ba8106a56046%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DV7EKq696OPkaJhMnEfZBhHQhAJ8&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

I've posted this video for a few reasons, it's fun, Devi and Katie's friends might like to watch it and it's one great example of how a dog uses it's tail. Watch Devi's tail when she is on her back. She uses it to help keep her balanced and move while on her back. Check it out.

In the canine massage classes I teach I always talk about how important it is to not ignore the tail. It is an important part of a dog's anatomy (not to mention communication). But watching this video amazed even me. It was almost as though it was another limb...which...I guess it is.

Now on Facebook

I'm not a social networker. I'm not really even a business networker, but I kind of make myself. But, I'm not above trying to stay in the loop. One of the things I wanted to do with this blog was put some slide shows together of my canine clients, class snapshots, etc. I have not been able to figure it out and to add each one as a separate photo would take up a lot of space and make downloading go pretty slow I'm afraid.

So, I began looking a Facebook. I was sort of surprised when I found somewhere along the line I had already started an account. I believe that happened because SplashDog had started their page and they wanted input from each of us. I thought then that I would do something so I went ahead and started an account then let it sit and forgot about it.

The good news is that I now have an album started of some of my sweet, beautiful canine clients. Most of which were snapped with my phone at work. I will be adding more pictures to that album as well as start an album of pics from classes and hopefully get some video on there as well.

If you want to check it out go to http://www.facebook.com/jlinn.henline?ref=profile

Please let me know if you visit and like it. It will encourage me to continue this challenge. I do still find it pretty challenging to navigate to what I want and add what I want. Practice makes perfect, or in my case, capable. So maybe I'll see you as a friend there or see a comment about how great the dogs are...because they ALL are!

Classes That Help You Be a Better Pet Guardian

INTRODUCTION TO CANINE MASSAGE

How many times have you noticed your dog running or walking with an odd gait, getting up or lying down slowly or stiffly, not wanting to go up or down stairs? Brook has a very thick coat, with thick under coat. It used to take a long time to get the shampoo worked down to the skin and Brook was not a happy pup about that. I'm sure it wasn't a picnic for Cate either.
So Cate had this idea of trying to work the shampoo in before wetting her down. Since the undercoat repels water the shampoo got worked into the skin before the coat had a chance to fight off the water.
Cate says it is much more efficient this way, saving time, shampoo and pout time:-)
Have fun with it! Let me know if you have a time saving or helpful hint for your dog's health and happiness, oh, and yours too!

They are not Children

I've heard people say it. I've read it, but the last time it was directed at me and it was my Achilles heal I guess. While in session with a physical therapist, chatting about my work, she blurted out that she has a dog, she loves her dog, but she would not spend "that kind" of money on him After all, he's not a child.

This statement brought up several uncomfortable issues for me. First being the feeling of a personal attack. I mean, she basically just invalidated my work, what I believe in. Second, why did she think it was appropriate to tell me that at all? I am her patient for crying out loud. We weren't on a personal level. Quite unprofessional. Third, what does that statement really mean?

"He is not a child". As in; a person between birth and full growth; a boy or girl: a son or daughter; a baby or infant? No. But in the sense that many people feel the emotional bond with their dog, the important relationship they have with their animal means the world to them.

Our 'pets' are dependent on us for nearly everything, food, water, shelter, companionship, the basics of life. Quality of life for them is where the biggest differences arise, between 'pet ownership' and our dog being an equal member of the family. Most people I know equate love with the emotional bond and level of closeness they feel with their animal. For instance, it is hard to believe that a person who leaves their dog outside, rain or shine, hot or cold has the same level of loving relationship with the person that sleeps with their dog.

My point is that we have 'adopted' this living, breathing being, brought it into our home and family. By doing so we have committed to caring for it. The level of care is open to interpretation, just as it would be for a human child, as long as the basics are met. But it was a decision we made and it was a life changing decision. Much more so for this animal than for us. They are our dependents, who rely on us and want nothing more than to please us and be with us. For many people that is the difference. Their dogs love them unconditionally. I can't say that for a biological child. So why is that not important enough to some people?

Many of my clients have children but they had their dog first. Others have children who have grown and moved on, living their own lives. And there are others who have no children. Many of these people, men and women, have confided in me that they love their dogs more than they can express. The dog is their 'child'. That does not mean they love their biological children less, but that these amazing animals bring a kind of love to their lives that no one else has.

I RESCUED A HUMAN TODAY by Janine Allen, as posted on the web

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering
apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew
I had to help her.

I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid.
As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little
accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn't want her to know
that I hadn't been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter
keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about
my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make
a difference in someone's life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I
shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to
comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate
for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I r aised my paw
to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I
instantly jumped into her arms.

I would promise to keep her safe.
I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile
and sparkle in her eyes.

I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are
out there who haven't walked the corridors. So many more to be
saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today."

The new year is a time for taking stock, for affirming what is working out and seeking change for what isn't. Every year brings new challenges. Some years more than others. The one constant is change whether we welcome it or not.

2009 will be challenging for most all of us. The economy is a big factor in our lives. Our health and the health of those we love is a major concern. With the cost of health insurance rising and our jobs hanging on by threads we question what we really need and what we can do without.

I have been in this same situation. Dealing with my arm pain has been a priority so that I can continue to do the work that I love. Other issues have taken a back seat. What I realize after the last several months of this routine is just how much our body relies on balance.

My regular massage and chiropractic visits have been on hold and my routine acupuncture has been stopped as well. My yoga practice has become my only balance. Between occupational therapy, doctor visits and prescriptions, my healthcare budget is stretched to the limit.

The time has come to re-evaluate the situation and decide where to go with my path to well-being for the new year.

I understand the distress of having to decide how much wellness care to pursue. It can be spiritually draining. My personal goal is to continue to re-incorporate the therapies that have been so helpful to my over all health, albeit on a less frequent, but regular basis.

Moderation is my theme for 2009. The visits to my massage therapist and chiropractor may be scaled back, but I will continue to do what I know my body needs. I have found out that stopping all together is not the answer, financially, physically or spiritually. If I cut back on the activities that I don't need, I have the ability to enjoy and be rewarded with the things I do need. What a concept. I seem to vaguely remember my Mother telling me this many years ago:-)

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153); type='text'>It's Swim Season

Finally, the weather trend is looking a bit warmer, the sun is shining more and the days are definitely longer. Our bodies are waking up to the potential of warm weather activities. We have many opportunities for entertainment outdoors, camping, hiking, going to the beach. Many of our dogs love water and want to swim and frolic in the summer fun as well.

Swimming is one of the very best forms of exercise. The resistance of the water, the full range of motion and the cardiac work are the main reasons. Even if you are not a strong or good swimmer, there is still fun and great exercise to be had. Wear a life jacket or floatation belt to help you out and you can have just as much fun as the good swimmers, even if you don't look as cool.

Safety is everything in the water. Always be safe and make sure the kids and pups are safe. Admittedly, I really know nothing about child safety other than make sure they always stay with their Mom or Dad. That way I don't have to worry about them:-)

Now dog safety, that's a different animal, literally. As a canine water therapist, one thing I hear a lot that is simply not true, is that all dogs know how to swim. What all dogs know how to do is kick their legs when they are in the water. Many of the dogs I work with at SplashDog splash around, kicking their legs and straining to keep their heads out of the water in the beginning. This works pretty well for a while but I can tell you, they will tire quickly. If there is any kind of current this is an even faster recipe for disaster. At SplashDog we do teach dogs how to swim and swim safely.

The only way to know if your dog is able to swim safely is to watch them do it. I don't advise anyone to throw their dog in the water as I have heard of some people actually doing. They have the opinion that the dog will sink or swim. Well, that is pretty harsh. The shock of being thrown into water will create a panic and, more than likely, create panic swimming which is what I described above, not safe.

A better way to see if your dog can safely swim is to walk them into the water, or if in a pool, lift them in. Be sure you are fully covered, not in a bikini or just swim trunks as you could possibly get pretty scratched up. Once the dog is in the water far enough to need to swim let go of them but keep close enough to be sure you can grab them if need be. They could swim the wrong direction, away from you or begin to sink. If either happens, lift them up a bit under the torso and steer them by holding the chest as well.

If the dog turns out to swim on their own relatively well, still keep an eye on them in case they tire before they get to an area that they can stand up. We tend to feel that dogs are capable of climbing up on docks, boat steps and big rocks after they have been swimming. That is a dangerous assumption. Be ready to help your dog out of the water after a swim. I've seen many dogs at SplashDog have a great swim and then collapse when they tried to walk up the steps to get out.

One way to be assured that your dog is safe is to use a canine life vest. There are several on the market. The only way to be sure to get a good fit is to try it on. If you order one and it doesn't fit snug and close securely, be sure to return it and get a better fit. The last thing you want is to be in a dangerous situation and have the dog slip out of the vest. Most vests have handles built in to the top of the vest that help if you need to grab your dog. Many now have reflective strips which are especially great if you boat and are out with your dog after dark.

One website I found, listed below, has several types of vests.

http://www.pontoonspecialists.com/c-76-your-pets-page.aspx

I did a search for "canine floatation device" and came up with quite a few sites. Or you could check with local pet supply shops and sporting goods supply stores to find a vest that you like.

My last word on this subject: not all dogs like to swim, even Labs. Don't force your dog to swim. If you want them to swim or want to know they can for safety, be patient and help them learn. This is the kind and safe way to enjoy the water with your dog and your dog will probably appreciate the time with you in the process:-)

Have fun, enjoy summer and stay safe!
For those of you who know Devi, you may know her as the sweet, happy, playful little girl that I know so well, or you may know her as the little Tasmanian Devil dog that has become a handful of twisting growling fur and teeth.

Thankfully, the latter is very infrequent, although never okay. It began with some growling and posturing when she was on her leash and another dog would get close enough to smell. She did great at the dog park right off the bat. Once in a while she would get in a tussle, but not bad and who knows why or who started it.

As she became more secure at home and with me, oddly enough, she began getting fiestier. The one that really set her off was my Mom's little dog Lady. Lady is approx. 14/15. She was a rescue in the fall of 2006 from Paws and it took awhile for her to bond with Mom. No one seems to know much about her past but she obviously decided she needed to be courted.

When Devi and Lady met I made a big mistake. I had just had Devi about a week. We entered Mom's apartment with Devi on leash. Lady was asleep on the floor next to Mom. The living area where we all were is pretty small. Lady sleeps pretty deeply, is hard of hearing and possibly has some loss of sight. Devi and I were about 3-4 ft. away from Lady when she woke up. The first thing Lady saw was a dog right there in front of her, in here house, watching her sleep! Man, who wouldn't have been grumpy.

Lady barked at Devi and that was all it took. Devi immediately went after Lady. It scared the heck out of me and I pulled her frantically back with the leash and yelled at her. Mom grabbed Lady and there was no damage except to my ego and all or our emotional states.

That incident set the tone for the relationship between Lady and Devi. Lady is a forgive and forget girl. She will bark and grump at Devi whenever they get face to face, but mostly she is happy to just stay out of Devi's way. Devi, on the other hand, even though she forgot about the immediate threat, will still go after Lady with, to my eye, no provocation. Just out of the blue. One minute every one is fine, going about their business, the next Devi is ready to pounce on Lady.

Obviously, this is very upsetting and so I have not taken her back to Mom's since the last nasty incident. Instead I called an animal behaviorist and have begun working with her on the leash aggression. After we get somewhere with that then we'll confront the issue with Lady.

After we began the training routine, which she seemed to respond to nicely, Devi had digestive trouble due to the treating involved. I got help and ideas from the behaviorist, Christine. Devi began to backtrack. Since I had to begin giving her treats that were basically her regular diet to keep from upsetting her, she lost interest.

Now, happily, we have found that microwave cooked, skinless chicken breast cut into tiny pieces is working great. We have also incorporated the "gentle leader" head halter which will help control her if she decides not to cooperate with the training. So far this system is working well. We are working hard to be polite canine citizens so that everyone will know her as the sweet girl that she is.

Last weekend was my first trip back to Copalis beach without my boy Bud. Bud loved it so much. I'm so happy that Bud and Rusty and Joe and I were able to make 2 trips to Iron Springs last year, one in April and one in Sept., both beautiful.

Last Saturday Joe, Rusty, Devi and I went, arriving about 3pm. We dumped all of our luggage and gear then hiked the short hike to the beach. Copalis beach is about 30 miles north or Ocean Shores. It is a huge expanse of soft, light colored sand bordered by picturesque red bluffs. Iron Springs Resort sits on one of those bluffs, overlooking the ocean and beach.

Bud loved to feel the sand between his toes, the sea breeze in his face and to trot all over the beach, leash-free. Little Rusty was always just behind Bud, following his "buddy" everywhere, fully trusting that the journey would be fun and safe.

This was Devi's first ocean visit as far as I can tell. She was excited but not overly so, to the point of getting too far away from us. She was such a good girl. Joe and I enjoyed throwing the flying disc as far as possible for her and watching her run fast and free. We encouraged Rusty to go too, to run after Devi, or the disc. He stayed close to us, running out close to Devi when she wasn't too far from us. He was doing it for us. Poor little guy. I think he missed Bud. He hasn't bonded with Devi much yet.

Our second day was a rainy, grey Sunday. We braved a walk on the beach anyway. The tide was way out and we actually made it pretty close to Copalis Rock and got completely soaked. The dogs were not only soaked, but caked in sand.

A couple baths later and after a short nap we found Devi's left eye was swollen shut. After my initial panic, I was able to track down the one emergency Vet. on call within an hours drive in Hoaquim. Dr. Westby was great. He found that she had cut her 3rd eyelid, probably from grabbing and shaking the crab legs she found on the beach earlier. An eyewash and antibiotic ointment treatment helped her out and I felt much better knowing she was safe.

During the journey back we were pulled over by a State Trooper for speeding! Crap! What a day. After Joe explained the whole story and the Trooper saw the dogs, especially Rusty and his smiley little face, he let Joe off with a warning saying that we were lucky he was a compassionate person:-) Nice guy. Joe was careful to keep the cruise control engaged as much as he could after that.

We had a really nice time even with the rain and the health scare. A day on the ocean is a good day, regardless of the weather. Can't wait to get back again.

<img width='1' height='1' spent 2 months working with me at my office, at SplashDog and accompanies me on location. She has also taken on the role of personal trainer but knows when I need serious downtime and is helpful in keeping me on track.
The training was intense, a trial by fire, beginning full time from day one and she has performed incredibly.

Some of her main duties include greeting clients, helping with emotional balancing, aiding relaxation by checking in with clients during sessions, protection of occupants in case of intruders, checking pool before and after shifts with full immersion test of water temp's, protection of auto during on location visits, break enforcement. Oh, and wiggles, licks and available for as much petting as anyone wants to give her.

Devi is available Mon., Tue., Thu., Fri., and Sat. all day. If you haven't met her yet, I hope you will be as happy with her service as I am and my clients have been so just goes to show that dogs are so much more than utilities or property. Any of us who have truly 'shared' our lives with them know this unwaveringly, but there are still folks out there that are ignorant and lacking enough compassion and empathy to see and feel the true nature of these amazing beings.

I like to think that those are the people that this dog prays for. And yes, I do believe dogs can pray, they can hope and dream. Not the same as we do I suppose, but we know they can project what the outcome of something will be and that they long for companionship and food.

When I hear of some of the awful things that people still do and think about animals, dogs especially, I just don't understand it. My mind spins and I have to allow myself to believe in monsters, abominations that are cruel, incapable of empathy and compassion towards those that are different, helpless.

Those are the ones I hope this dog is praying for.

Those are the ones who may be understanding in another lifetime how the ones they look down on now really do feel.

I'm only human and that is what I am praying believe we are in a new age, a good one:-)
I have my very first house call to a private home with a water therapy pool for the rehab and healthcare of a loved family dog. I don't know the story yet of how they came about putting in this pool or whether it is their pool and has been converted for the dog's care. I applaud people who are able and willing to do this for their dog.

We know that warm water therapy is a wonderful way to help keep a dog in shape whether they have injuries or disabilities so it only seems right that someone would eventually bring the therapy HOME!! How cool is that!

I'll update the blog after I get more information and go through the session. Man, I hope it isn't a home, 6 person spa at 100 degrees! That could be a problem...........

Update:

The session went very well. The spa is about 10 feet long and 6 feet wide with a sloped bottom and adjustable jets. Unlike the pool at Splashdog there are no steps but there are seats at two corners which helped. The dog is a large lab, approx. 70 pounds, with long legs. He didn't have trouble getting in but I was nervous about him getting out onto the wooden deck that the spa was set into. He did really well while I was there as did his Mom. She had been in the water and seen the therapists at work at SplashDog and had a good idea what was involved in getting some good therapy for her dog and making sure the session was safe.

I'm sure they have been successful at the challenge they took on. I am happy for the family and am happy that I was able to be of some assistance to get them started. What a fabulous job I have!

Let the Training Begin

Training my new dog is a challenge. It seems to me, the biggest challenge is taking in all of the information and processing it. I know how she feels. Not only is she getting a great deal of yes's and no's, I am as well. Everyone has a different idea and everyone wants to tell me what that is. Each has merit. Each has been tried and has worked for someone, somewhere. But mostly, they all involve teaching me how to help my dog understand what I want her to do.

Funny how some things are easier than other to get across. Sit, down, drop it, those were easy enough. Actually, pretty much everything I have been consistent about running through with Devi has been successful.

I am beginning to see a pattern of how she learns and how we teach one another. It isn't all me teaching her. Some things she shows me. For instance, when she was upset at SplashDog while I was working with the clients in the beginning, I noticed that as she did calm down, she was laying under one of the chairs. Aha! Thanks Devi, for showing me a spot that made you more comfortable. I put her bed there the next time we were in and she was much more calm during my sessions.

One thing I notice with trainers is that they know about canine body language, pack behavior and how the dogs see us but I think they sometimes miss the fact that the respect for one another includes taking some cues from the dogs.

I don't want to train my dog to break her spirit or squelch the fun she has. I admit, I like a spirited dog with a distinct, strong personality (I'll write about Abby sometime to exhibit just how much that is true;-). I do need to teach her how to be polite all of the time and make sure she is safe, but training her to be submissive and subservient is not my goal.

There is a balance and I am really confused at the moment as to how to reach it. Together we will find that place and I am confident that Devi will be a great companion and happy girl for the long time we will have together.

<img width='1' height='1' girls picture and write up. "Needs a home"... Something about her struck a nerve. After meeting, which went well, then spending an afternoon together running around (like I always do), meeting friends (canine, feline and human), I realized how special she is and fell head over heels in l-o-v-e.

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(51, 51, (abridged version)

Devi was a stray in Eastern Washington, around Prosser. She was picked up by the local animal control and taken to the animal shelter there. She was scheduled to be "put down" when the folks at Rescue Pup found her. Rescue Pup helps adoptable dogs by sending them to foster homes until they can find forever homes with good people. www.rescuepup.org

<span home for a short time but the couple that were fostering split up and had to find another foster home to send their charges to. Devi then went to another home with about 5 other dogs and 5 cats. She was well taken care of, nursed through her kennel cough, and her spay surgery. She was adopted by a lady who changed her mind not long after she took her and was returned to the foster home. All in the first year of her life.

When I found her and applied to adopt her I had to leave her as I was leaving for a 7 day vacation out of the country. That was a really difficult thing to do to this little, trusting soul. I knew she was in good hands and they assured me she would be waiting for me when I returned. Sure enough, she was!

Her name in foster care was Phoebe. Pretty, but didn't feel right to me. Especially because of the pretty but dopey Phoebe from the sit-com, Friends. I knew this little one needed a strong name. Devi came to me while relaxing with her one afternoon. This seemed just right.

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: beginning as she is completely housebroken and knew the sit command when I brought her home. She is learning all the time and enjoys it, as long as she gets lots of playtime too.

<span class="Apple-style-span"
